A baby dragon will make its home in Newcastle Cathedral this summer – part of Newcastle Cathedral’s Brilliant Beasts summer events which invite visitors – old and young – to discover some of the beasts built into the fabric of this city centre cathedral. There’s a dragon parade through the streets and a sock puppet workshop, and a baby dragon in his own Dragon’s Lair thanks to a community exhibition plus there are lectures too on folklore. Portsmouth Cathedral will bring the outside indoors creating a feast for the senses with The Wild Cathedral sensory garden, which opens daily from Tuesday 16 August – Saturday 3 September with free admission.

Worcester Cathedral hosted Young Voices New Visions in its medieval cloister, an annual exhibition showcasing the artistic talent of young people from across the county. Southwell Minster, Gloucester and Carlisle cathedrals have all been named “Travellers’ Choice Winners” for 2020 by TripAdvisor. This is a major coup for all these cathedrals; only ten per cent of businesses on TripAdvisor achieve this award.
Visitors will have the unique opportunity to explore the Cathedral for a sensory garden experience suitable for the whole family. Visitors have been encouraged to sit with the new statue and take a selfie and share using the hashtag #withthebard. This Friday Southwark Cathedral will also host Bard in the Yard, a new play by the Will & Co theatre company as a response to the closure of theatres during the pandemic. This one man show takes its inspiration from our lives in lockdown and transports it to the plague quarantine of 1605. During the evening on Thursday 2 June, the cathedral will be joining other monuments across the UK to light up in red, white and blue.

Luke Jerram’s huge art installations of Gaia and his Museum of the Moon can be seen at a number of our cathedrals in the next few months, including Ely, Bristol and Wakefield, the National History Museum’s Dippy on Tour was confirmed to open in Norwich Cathedral next month, and 74 sculptures by 24 artists from the South West Sculptors group went on display in Exeter Cathedral to reflect hope, resilience and new beginnings this summer.
